Quality, Safety & Governance

Safe care is built through good systems and good people.

Quality is not a slogan. It comes from recruitment, training, clear procedures, supervision, accurate records, safeguarding awareness, communication, risk management and a willingness to learn when something can be improved.

01

Safer recruitment

Care staff should go through appropriate recruitment and pre-employment checks before they are deployed, including identity, right-to-work and background checks applicable to the role, references and employment history review.

02

Induction and training

Staff should receive induction and training appropriate to their responsibilities, followed by ongoing learning, supervision and competency support.

03

Safeguarding

Staff are expected to recognise and report concerns about abuse, neglect, exploitation, unsafe practice or deterioration in wellbeing through the appropriate safeguarding and escalation routes.

04

Risk management

Care planning should consider foreseeable risks while also respecting the person’s rights, choices and independence. Risk management should support safer living rather than unnecessarily restrict it.

05

Medication safety

Where medication forms part of the care service, responsibilities should be clearly assessed, documented and monitored, with incidents or concerns escalated appropriately.

Attentive, careful support during a home visit

Standards that hold up in the details

Infection prevention, privacy, feedback and quality monitoring matter just as much as the visible parts of care.

06

Infection prevention and hygiene

Staff are expected to follow appropriate infection prevention, hand hygiene and protective-equipment procedures relevant to the care being provided.

07

Privacy and confidentiality

Personal information should be handled lawfully, securely and only shared where there is a legitimate reason to do so.

08

Feedback and complaints

People should be able to raise concerns without fear of poorer treatment. Complaints and feedback should be acknowledged, reviewed and used as opportunities to improve.

09

Quality monitoring

Managers should use reviews, audits, incidents, complaints, staff oversight and feedback to identify themes and strengthen the service.
